Hi, my name is Gerry Chua. My father took a lot of photographs of us 5 kids growing up in Manila. Most of them were black and white and later circa 1965,he started shooting in color. I can remember my dad telling all of us to keep still as he took pictures of us on vacation or just when there was a special occassion. This was my first exposure to photography. He used a Rolliflex TLR (twin lens reflex) camera usinmg 120 film. For my 14th birthday, I got a Kodak Brownie. Looking back, the Brownie seem so prehistoric. The second time I renewed interest on photography was i 1977. My younger brother and I were on our way to the United States for graduate school. We had a two day stop over in Hong Kong. My brother, who was already involved in photography, bought himself a Nikon F2 and several lenses. I remember scolding him for spending so much money. I went for a cheap Minolta camera body and lens. After grad school, I lost interest in photography. Marielle was born in 1992 and this time, I felt it was the right time to buy some decent photo equipment to document family life. For the first few years, I was content with the Canon EOS 630. It gave me auto focus and took great photos. Like being addicted to drugs, I had to have a body that was a step up - that was the EOS 3. Another two years flew by, I got myself the best model that Canon had at that time - EOS 1v. I still have both these two film cameras plus a Contax G2 rangefinder. I have been told by a lot of photographers that I have known over the years, buy good lenses, they dont depreciate much. Camera bodies come and go. I have been a faithful Canon user. I have accumulated lenses over a 20 year period that have served me well. I primarily shoot with a 1DMK3 for table tennis. My lens of choice for table tennis are the 200mm 1.8 or the 135 2.0. I like shooting table tennis since my children play this sport. Shooting table tennis has taken me to a lot of big tournaments in the United States and I have also travelled to Kuala Lumpur, Doha and Bremen to photograph the World Table Tennis Team Championships. Both Marielle and Ethan are also liking photography. In the last three years, we always planned a week to 10 days to travel around the Southwest to shoot landscapes. I hope you like these.
Best Regards, Gerry |
